Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) & Citizenship Education

This project:

  • provides a starting points as we aim to help students see their own identities reflected in the curriculum
  • guides teachers through discussions to determine strategies relevant to the students that are in front of them
  • aligns with the guidelines for Equity and Inclusive Education in Ontario.
    (uses the terms Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy)

Understanding Culturally Relevant Pedagogy

Description: In this clip teachers explore their understanding of the concept Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy.

Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy is comprised of three components:

Academic Success

  • Demonstrate a culture of high expectations of all students, with necessary provision of support
  • Use high-yield teaching Strategies and differentiate instruction
  • Monitor student success through precise and consistent Assessment AS, FOR, and OF Learning
  • Develop and foster caring relationships with and among students
  • Demonstrate collaborative, innovative problem solving

Cultural Competence

  • Mobilize students’ cultures as vehicles for learning
  • Foster connections to knowledge of families and communities
  • Value and respect students’ social identities and lived realities

Critical Consciousness

  • Create opportunities for students to develop a broader socio-political consciousness
  • Foster critique of cultural norms, values, mores and institutions that produce and maintain inequities
