Can Geo Education 2017 Summer Institute

Dates: July 11-13, 2017

Location: 50 Sussex Drive, Ottawa ON

Participants: 15 geography or social studies teachers from across Canada

Theme: Fieldwork – Less intimidating and more fun than you think it is!

Fieldwork and experiential learning plays a key role in the development of a student’s spatial awareness skills. This 3-day workshop will provide teachers with various ways to incorporate fieldwork into their curriculum, teaching them how to develop resources to meet the needs of all students in their classroom.

July 10 Participants arrive in Ottawa, Check in to the University of Ottawa residences at 90 University Ave. Participants will be sharing double suites and may arrive at any point throughout the day.
July 11 Morning:

In-class interactive presentations.

Afternoon:

Field trip

July 12 Morning:

In-class interactive presentations.

Afternoon:

Field trip

July 13: Morning:

Presentations on work from day 1 and 2, development of communications and professional development plans for 2017-2018 school year.

Afternoon:

Workshop ends and participants leave.

Travel:

All 15 participants are eligible to apply for a travel bursary. The amount of each bursary granted will be decided by RCGS staff based on need. Participants will outline their travel need as part of the application process and receive a cheque when their commitments are complete.

Accommodation:

All accommodation costs will be covered by the RCGS, participants will be staying in suite-style residences at the University of Ottawa.

Meals:

Breakfast, lunch and snacks for each day of the institute will be included. Participants will be required to cover their dinner each evening.

Transportation:

All transportation during the institute (to and from field trips and meeting locations) will be covered by the RCGS.

Participant requirements:

Each of the 15 participants in the summer institute will be required to:

  1. Attend all sessions while in Ottawa
  2. Produce one activity/lesson plan/unit plan/project based on their experience to be published on the Can Geo Education website
  3. Deliver a minimum of two professional development workshops throughout the 2017-2018 school year
  4. Produce one Can Geo in the Classroom during 2018
